Welcome to the second edition of my new weekly boxing column in which I will give my genuine views on the week’s events. Got back from Turkey on Friday and was at York Hall Saturday.
Saturday night saw Tony Bellew retain his WBC Cruiserweight title with an exciting punch up with BJ Flores. That was exciting but I must confess to being less than excited about the pantomime afterwards between Tony Bellew and David Haye. Anyone who buys into that as genuine must be a fan of WWE. Reminds me of the fake hype and farce between Haye and Harrison and I think this fight would be just as competitive. Not for me!
More for me is the now confirmed clash between Anthony Joshua and Klitschko to take place on 10th December. The young up and coming lion against the faded Champion. This is a fight I would like to see and does not need the hype nonsense.
Contrary to an Eddie Hearn interview I confirm that terms have NOT been agreed our end for Dereck Chisora to face Dillian Whyte on November 26th. Dereck wants the fight but we are awaiting a realistic offer.
Erick Ochieng failed narrowly on Saturday in his bid to become Goodwin Boxing’s 7th Southern Area Champion going down 96-94 to Asinia Byfield in a fight that could have gone either way. Ringside was split. Erick was 3 points down after 2 rounds trying to work out the very unorthodox Byfield style. He clearly won the last 8 rounds on everyone’s cards but not enough in the eyes of referee Lee Cook.
Good news during the week was that Goodwin Boxing promoters won two purse bids to give our lads home advantage in important upcoming tussles. Joel McIntyre gets home advantage in Portsmouth on December 10th when he takes on Miles Shinkwin for the English Light-Heavyweight title whilst Kevin Campion was the winning bidder for the Josh Kennedy v Lucien Reid fight for an eliminator for the English Super-Bantamweight title which takes place on 3rd December at York Hall.
This week Goodwin Boxing heads to Torquay in Devon where Jack Green stages his first show under the Goodwin boxing banner Area Super-Lightweight title bout between Rakeem Noble and Kay Prosper and the new Semi-Finals of the Fascia and Glazing Supplies Fight Cup in the Cruiserweight division takes place.
