Smith must focus on the job, not the prize

Callum Smith must ensure he keeps his eyes firmly on the job at hand as he faces Clitheroe’s Luke Blackledge on the undercard of Joshua vs Molina in front of a sellout crowd at Manchester arena tonight. The former GB starlet needs a victory in order to keep his world title dreams alive going into 2017.

Liverpool’s 26 year old prospect hasn’t put a foot wrong so far in his professional career, notching up 21 consecutive wins and knows he is only one fight away from a probable world title clash against the winner of Badou Jack versus James DeGale in the New Year.

The chances of Mundo overlooking Blackledge is hard to believe given the stock he comes from and the wealth of experience he has around him in his team. Part of the fighting Smith family, Callum goes into the fight knowing Blackledge was beaten soundly by fellow Scouser Rocky Fielding, a man he himself dispatched in good style earlier this year.

Having said all that, Blackledge is better known as a boxer rather than a puncher which should play right into Smith’s hands given his amateur pedigree. If Callum can outbox his rival then there’s every chance he could make his devastating power count on his way to making it 22-0.

The fight is due to be aired around 7.30 P.M and is available on Sky Box Office.
