Promoter Eddie Hearn, has unveiled Co. Durham Light-Welterweight Bradley Saunders (10-0, 8KOs) as the latest signing for Matchroom Boxing.
Hearn’s promotional company is considered as one of the strongest in the country, and with the signing of Saunders, it’s hoped that the power of Sky television will help raise the profile of boxing in the North East.
Matchroom wasted little time in signing their man; as it’s only been a matter of days since Frank Warren announced Saunders’ contract wouldn’t be extended.
Hearn admitted that Saunders had been on their shortlist for the last year, and jumped at the chance to sign the Sedgefield man when the opportunity presented itself.
“He’s a fantastic young talent. Bradley has been on our radar for the past year with a record of ten wins, which includes eight devastating knockouts.
“We have been looking to do something in the North East for a long time and now we have the perfect excuse with Bradley being part of the Matchroom team. He’s a great flag bearer for boxing in the North East and we are excited to host a show here in the New Year,” added Hearn.
Saunders is set to make his debut under the Matchroom banner on the 22nd Nov card in Liverpool, and then plans are rife for the 28 year-old to headline his own show on the 4th of April at the Metro Radio Arena.
Under a new promotional stable, Saunders will hope to continue the rapid progress which saw him pick up the WBO Inter-Continental title in only his tenth fight. In the not too distant future, the former GB Olympian plans to face the best in the 140lb division.
“I think I can compete with the likes of Chris Algieri, he can’t punch hard and it would give me the chance to go in there and take risks,
“This time next year I will be competing with those sort of fighters. I want to be at that level soon. I love fighting in the North East and I want to bring titles back up here,” said Saunders.
