Leo “Terremoto” Santa Cruz is promising to steal the show, with a mighty rumble this Saturday night in Las Vegas, when he defends his WBC Super bantamweight title against his challenger and former sparring partner Manuel “Suavecito” Roman, on the undercard of Mayhem.
The Champion is making his third defence of the green gold belt at 122 pounds; Santa Cruz (27-0-1, 15 KOs) will try to beat Roman spectacularly (17-2-3 , 6 KOs), to prove that he’s good and ready for a clash against Cuban, Guillermo Rigondeaux.
“We hope to get the victory and then take on Guillermo Rigondeaux” said the boxer from Michoacán de Ocampo, Mexico.
However, he acknowledges his current opponent’s quality, which he already knows and appreciates, after sharing some tough sparring sessions in the past: “I know that Roman is a great boxer and he can fight. I don’t and I won’t underestimate him. That’s why I just completed one of the toughest training camps to be ready.”
“Fighters like Roman are dangerous. They come with everything they’ve got, and sometimes they surprise you, so we don’t underestimate anyone and we are always ready.”
Meanwhile Roman commented: “We are here to try create an upset. I’ve worked very hard, three times a day and I also focused my work outs on my strength and condition.”
The specialists and bookmakers make Leo the hot odds favorite, but Roman, who has his own legion of supporters isn’t in the slightest intimidated, “Nothing worries me. I know myself and I know I’m ready. He’s a great fighter who throws a lot of punches, but I’m a better fighter! “
