Macklin´s Gym Marbella (MGM) – one of the most prominent management and promotional entities in the boxing world – has announced a change of control and re-structuring within their group. The MGM brand, which was established in Marbella and boasts a network of franchised gyms throughout the UK, has been taken over by Scottish boxing promoter Sam Kynoch. Kynoch (age 29) has been involved in boxing promotion for the last decade and was a corporate lawyer with a top law firm before becoming fully immersed in the boxing world.
Kynoch has been running MGM Scotland since the beginning of 2015 and has been very active during this time, with 10 promotions taking place with the first 12 month of promoting under the MGM banner. Kynoch’s relationship with MGM started in 2012 – when he brought the first group of boxers over to train at the MGM Gym in Marbella, which is now the training base of European and World Champions.
The shift in control within the group coincides with the retirement from the ring of Matthew Macklin, who will maintain a key role within the team at MGM.
Kynoch commented that: “MGM have grown at an exponential rate within the boxing world in recent years, which is evident both in terms of the vast number of boxers within the MGM stable and the quality of the boxers in the stable – which is led by World Champions Liam Smith and Billy Joe Saunders. The opportunity to assume control of the MGM brand has arisen as a result of individuals within the team looking to step back from the boxing world and because of Matthew (Macklin) retiring from the ring / looking to push the MGM brand in new territories.
We already have lots of plans in place for the brand which will see several new MGM franchise gyms / promoters established both in the UK and further afield within the next 12 months. We will also be announcing some massive new signings in the coming months – as well as of course continuing to work with our current stable of boxers. We have a great team here at MGM and I am delighted to be at the helm for what promises to be a very exciting journey.”
