Ray Beltran 30-7-1 18KO’s stopped Takahiro Ao 27-4-1 12KO’s in the second round last night in a fight that could have won him the WBC lightweight title. Unfortunately for Beltran who seems to be the poster child for hard luck fighters that could have been champions, he was not eligible to win the title. Coming in at 135.4 lbs. just .4 over the limit Beltran was ineligible to win the title.
Coming out in the first Beltran just appeared the bigger man and had the more telling punches. In the second Beltran landed a hard flush right hand that put Ao on his back hard. Referee Tony Weeks allowed Ao to get to his feet but it was a short lived as Beltran followed up with a series of shots that prompted the referee to stop the fight at 1 minute 26 seconds into the round.
The co-main event saw Konstantin Ponamarev 28-0 13KO’s defeat Michael Zewski 26-1 20KO’s by unanimous decision in a decent fight. Ponamarev out worked the undefeated Canadian throughout the bout and won with scores of 99-91, 98-92, 97-93
