As predicted, former WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov (24-3, 17KO’s) blasted out former WBC lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo (66-13-1, 57KO’s) in just five rounds last night in Russia.
At age 40, Castillo’s best days are far and away behind him and prior to this bout, you’d have been hard pushed to find a single boxing fanatic backing the former ring warrior.
If Castillo was a ring warrior of the 2000’s, then Russian Provodnikov is very much the warrior now. Many fight fans would have been forgiven for watching this fight through their fingers as former fan favourite Castillo stood in the ring with the tough Siberian.
After five very one sided rounds which proved little to the effect of boxing and more to the effect a much needed pay check, Castillo was saved by the mercy of referee Alexander Kalinkin.
The win does little for Provodnikov, other than help the transition of a supposed permanent move up to the 147lb welterweight division.
