Eamonn O’Kane 14 -1-1 (5 KOs) steps into the ring against the talented Tureano Johnson 18-1 (13 KOs) on October 17th in a final eliminator to become the mandatory challenger to the winner of Golovkin and Lemieux. On the Golovkin vs Lemieux undercard live on Boxnation and HBO.

O’Kane’s trainer Paddy Fitzpatrick spoke about Eamonn’s career progression and their goals as a team.

The former Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist has had a stop – start career, Fitzpatrick outlines O’Kanes’ promotional situation, “It is evident that Eamonn is in the ‘who needs him’ category, the thing is, he is not with a promoter so he does not get the lucrative, door opening opportunities as fighters who are backed by powerful promotional stables. Let’s face it, why give a guy like Eamonn a shot at one of your own fighters, he is a high risk opponent and dangerous in the ring.”

Going overseas into enemy territory always brings about a certain risk, Fitzpatrick recently experienced a tough split decision whilst with George Groves in Vegas. “Eammon is facing a Golden Boy fighter on a Golden Boy card, if we go in there happy with a decision, chances are we won’t be happy with the end result. To put it simply we won’t get the decision in a close fight.”

Being accepted by fans can lead to financial rewards and both Kane and Fitzpatrick aim to utilize that model. “The general public want to see good fights, they don’t necessarily in my opinion want to see a man who is undefeated having pitter patter defenses. If you look back at Ward vs Gatti neither had great records, those two were exciting to watch and had fan friendly styles and they were paid very well by HBO for a trilogy. Our goal is to win but also to impress HBO and US boxing fans in order to capture their hearts. This will lead to financially rewarding and publically rewarding fights for O Kane.”

“A crucial element for their future plans is becoming fan friendly with the new fighting style Eamonn will implement. Eamonn is grossly overlooked, it’s a great thing. I don’t understand why fighters spend energy convincing people not to overlook them. Being overlooked is a blessing! I would definitely entertain O’Kane vs Lee why can’t that be at Madison Square Garden on Saint Patricks Day? Because if GGG wins he will chase Cotto or Canelo why can’t Eamonn face Lemieux in New York. The doors are there, we just have to walk through them”
