Liam Walsh (17-0, 11KO’s) won the British and retained his Commonwealth super featherweight title this evening, with a superb victory over champion Gary Sykes (27-4, 6KO’s) at the Excel arena in London.
Walsh 28, started the fight superbly scoring a first round knockdown of his opponent , catching the on-rushing Sykes as he moved in. Sykes was obviously caught cold, trying to start the bout with a high work rate in an attempt to unsettle his Cromer opponent – unfortunately for him, he discovered things sometimes just don’t go to plan.
For large sections of the fight Walsh dominated in a southpaw stance, often confusing and bewildering his opponent with a stiff jab and smart footwork. The Norfolk man nearly had his 30 year old opponent out of the ring in round nine, but to his credit Sykes continued to fire back despite being hurt.
Judges score totals read 119-108, 118-111 and 118-109 all in favour of Walsh.
