This evening in Moscow, Russia saw the return of two long serving cruiserweight champions.
The bill entitled “Battle of the Cruiserweights” exhibited WBA champion Denis Lebedev facing Pawel Kolodziej and WBC king Krzysztof Wlodarczyk, defending his title for the seventh time against Grigory Drozd.
It was an opposing contrast in fortune for both men on the evening, with both expected to defend their titles against relatively obscure opponents. Wlodarczyk had the tougher assignment in Drozd, but he was still expected to overcome his foe in a predictably tense affair.
Lebedev (26-2, 20KO’s) made light work of his much taller opposition, knocking out Kolodziej in just the second round with a thunderous left hand.
Wlodarczyk (49-3-1, 35KO’s) however didn’t have the same fortune; he dropped a twelve round decision to his Russian opponent with scores of 119-108 x2 and 118-109, losing his WBC title in the process.
