King Kong takes on Power Kayode

By Albert Baker

September 11th wasn’t the day King Kong climbed the empire state building but it’s the day he attacks Las Vegas.

If by now you haven’t heard of Luis “King Kong” Ortiz you should make an effort to find out who he is on September 11th when he fights Lateef “Power” Kayode on a very interesting fight card on FoxSports 1. Ortiz is coming off a win against a faded Monte “Two Guns” Barrett in April earlier this year. King Kong controlled the ring against Barrett using an effective jab from his southpaw stance that he used to setup his power straight left that eventually put Barrett on the canvas and out of the fight.

A student from the list of great fighters to seek freedom and the ability to earn for their craft from Cuba Ortiz was a standout amateur on the world circuit. With sound boxing fundamentals, one punch knockout power, a charismatic smile, and a second appearance on American TV King Kong with a win could be an infusion of much needed excitement in a much maligned heavyweight division.

Kayode who is best known for his no contest after Antonio Tarver tested positive for banned substances has looked a bit rawer in his appearances on Showtime. If Kayode can come in with a bit more polish and an aggressive attack over the top of Ortiz’s jab he could get a win and the interim WBA title that is up for grabs in this fight.

Either way who doesn’t like a good heavyweight fight? These two have an obvious disdain for each other which should only benefit the fight fan that loves to see big men knock other big men unconscious.

Aside from the heavyweight action this midweek card is stacked with name fighters staying busy and also fighters trying to keep hopes of a career alive. In the co-feature Jesus Cuellar takes on Juan Manuel Lopez. Lopez is coming off of a crushing defeat to Francisco “Bandido” Vargas back in July and looks to get back in the win column or realize like so many before him that his career as anything other than a stepping stone is over.

Josesito “Riverside Rocky” Lopez is back in action against Rafael Cobos in a scheduled 8 round fight to stay busy. Lopez has recently been the subject of rumors to fight Amir Khan in what could shape up to be an exciting fight between two fighter that are usually in exciting fights.
