Joseph “JoJo” Diaz Jr. 17-0 10KO’s looks to continue his meteoric rise as he enters his fourth contest in 2015 against tough veteran Ruben Tamayo 25-6-4 17KO’s at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio California this Frday on Estrella TV.
Diaz took time out his training schedule to speak with me on the phone about his upcoming fight and his ascendance to blue chip prospect status.
Albert Baker: JoJo, you’re fighting a tough guy in Ruben Tamayo, he pushed Oscar Valdez on HBO and took him the distance, do you feel like you have to be impressive in this fight?
JoJo Diaz: Absolutely, he’s a tough guy; he pushed Valdez to his limits. I want to make a statement with this fight and show the boxing world that I am the next big thing. Tamayo is a veteran that’s really crafty and rangy he knows how to fight.
Albert Baker: How do you look impressive against a guy like Tamayo?
JoJo Diaz: I have to be aggressive, cut the ring off. I need to attack the body and follow up upstairs, I have to push him and shake him off of his game.
Albert Baker: You’re a junior featherweight at 122lbs. but we’ve seen you come in at 123lbs.and 125lbs. are you a 126lb. fighter now?
JoJo: I’ve been a 122lb. fighter for six or seven years. My body is growing and developing, moving forward I’m going to be a 126lb. fighter.
Albert Baker: The political landscape in boxing will allow you to have some very interesting matchups at 126lbs., is there anyone you have your eye on facing?
JoJo: I want to fight them all, I’d love to fight Abner Mares. It doesn’t matter, I want to be the best and to be the best you have to fight the best and I want to fight them all.
Albert Baker: You’re 17-0 right now and facing the type of solid veteran opposition that builds fighters, how far away are you from getting a serious fight against a name opponent?
JoJo: Eventually these fights are going to happen, GoldenBoy promotions is doing a good job and they’re going to put me in the right position to win a world championship.
Albert Baker: You’re becoming quite the celebrity in a city filled with celebrities, Los Angeles fills the venue whenever you fight. Has it hit you yet?
JoJo: You know, I do get recognized now whenever I go out. Growing a fan-base like this is a dream come true. I want to win for them and grow but, I have to stay humble and grounded.
Albert Baker: JoJo I want to thank you for your time and on behalf of InstantBoxing we wish you good luck and good health in the ring.
JoJo: Thank you, I appreciate the interview
