James De la Rosa shocked the audience at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas in the last few minutes after beating Alfredo Angulo during the latter’ first outing as a middleweight.
Angulo for this fight weighed in at 162 pounds on Friday after stating he wished to try his luck in the middleweight division after several defeats six pounds south of the boarder at junior middleweight.
The 26 year old De la Rosa made his actions clear as early as the second round with a knock down of Angulo with a double left hook which put the interim 154 pound champion on the seat of his pants. Angulo was then deducted a point in the seventh for consecutive low blows which left his 26 year old counterpart folded on the canvass.
Winning just a handful of rounds in the middle of the fight, the 32 year old Angulo’s career now looks to be in tatters with a defeat to the very lowly rated Mexican. It appeared “el Perro” may have had his man going in the ninth and tenth round when De la Rosa looked to have spent all his energy and was absorbing big shots, but he survived the final round barrage by boxing off the back foot and remaining mobile as Angulo brazenly marched forward with a high guard.
Angulo really rallied in the final three rounds but it didn’t seem enough to sustain his career. During the ninth round break, trainer Virgil Hunter warned this would be end of his man’s career if he could not knock his opponent out.
Scores read 98-90, 96-92 and 99-89 all in favour of James De la Rosa.
Alfredo Angulo drops to (22-5, 18KO’s) , whilst James De la Rosa picks up a big scalp and improves to (23-2, 13KO’s).
